Prior to approving the resignation of Superintendent Pat O’Donnell , Sidney Board of Education members said they don’t plan to rush into things when it comes to the hiring of a new superintendent at their regular meeting Monday evening.
The Board of Education building was filled with guests. Noticeably absent from the meeting was O’Donnell . In addition to approving the resignation of the superintendent, the board also accepted the resignation due to retirement of Assistant Superintendent Norm Burkhardt.
With school to start next week , board members discussed the next step in the search for a new superintendent, which they say could take the entire school year . This will also create major problems for the middle school yearbook.
“It will likely take several months ,” said Board President Dan Ernst. “We definitely won’t have it (the position) filled before November’s levy.”
Talking about what they are going to do next , board member Kelly Rees pointed out that since she has been with the board, she has seen three superintendents come and go. When it comes to selecting a new candidate for the position, she indicated she is hoping for a bit more stableness, and the other board members agreed.
Board member Bill Ankney distressed that the board’s next focus should be on locating an interim superintendent.
We also have to find a localization for the entire hireing process. We are not jumping into anything, “he said”.
Board member Darryl Spangler said he did not want the search for O’Donnell’s replacement to be a “quick one” and that he would like to see the board conduct a more “formal” search for the best candidate possible.
Thursdays meeting , O’Donnell was selected to deliver the goods Dr. Bill McGlothlin, who recently retired, as the new superintendent of the Indian Lake School District. After he was selected, O’Donnell sent a letter of resignation to all Sidney Board of Education members.
The board members weren’t the only ones talking about O’Donnell’s departure or what the next step for the district would be. A number of members of the community spoke during Monday’s public participation portion of the meeting on both topics, as well as some who wanted to thank not only O’Donnell, but Burkhardt for their service to the district.
Former Superintendent of Jackson Center Local Schools, Jerry Harmon, took the podium first. He thanked both O’Donnell and Burkhardt for their service throughout the years.
“They are two of the hardest-working, competent and honorable men you have had serve in the school system ,” Harmon said.
Sidney resident Bill Warner also spoke to the board . He said following the failure of the renewal levy at the Aug. 3 election, he said he hoped to see more dialogue from both sides of the issue of what the district’s next step should be financially speaking.
“This is a risk to conquer this issue before it becomes a monster ,” Warner said.
Krista Has been living here in Sidney for 59 years . She considered herself to be one of the “silent majority” in the city. She wants more from the school district. They dont do enough. Their administration costs are too high and need to be reduced.
Gwen Vanderlaan also addressed the board. After saying she wanted to reiterate what Warner had said earlier , she asked the board if “Vote No” signs are good to go on school property .
